The short answer

A market-to-kitchen morning in Ubud runs from hotel pickup to the working morning market (about 45 minutes), a Petulu rice-field walk (about 30 minutes), then two hours of hands-on cooking and lunch at Warung Tumang Bali by about 12:30pm. Shared class IDR 350.000 per guest; Ubud-area pickup is free.

The shape of the morning

A market-to-kitchen day in Ubud has four clear stops: pickup from your hotel or villa in the main Ubud area, about 45 minutes at the working morning market collecting roots and leaves, a short ride and half-hour walk through Petulu’s rice fields, then two hours cooking and lunch at Warung Tumang Bali. Drop-off is about 12:30pm, so the afternoon stays free. The clock is written out step by step on the morning itinerary page; this guide is the arc for planners.

This is the 8:30am session. The 2:30pm afternoon class keeps the fields and the kitchen but skips the market and ends in dinner instead. It pairs with a quieter village half-day if you want dinner rather than lunch.

Collect, then cook

At the stalls you see chili heaps, turmeric with dirt still on it, grated coconut, and banana leaves stacked for wraps. Chef Wayan shows which pieces go into base genep and which sit beside the board as sambal or dessert. The ingredients list is written up separately if you want the stall-by-stall detail. Back at the Petulu stove those same roots become 10+ dishes you cook yourself, including paste, sate, sambal, and usually dadar gulung.

Groups stop at eight guests. Vegetarian and vegan cooks stay at the same table; say so when you book so shrimp paste stays out of the grind.

Why the walk sits between market and fire

The rice-field walk is the pause that turns shopping into cooking. You leave the busy lanes, cross working paddies, and arrive at an open kitchen with terrace views and a welcome drink. It is about half an hour, flat, and part of the story of the plate: rice grows a short walk from the warung. A longer half-day food itinerary on this site covers the same order for travelers who want the walk written as a plan.

Price and how to book

Shared mornings are IDR 350.000 per guest. A private kitchen is IDR 700.000. Pickup in the main Ubud area is free. From south Bali, an optional shuttle is IDR 650.000 per booking, or come with your own driver. Check dates, then book; the kitchen confirms pickup on WhatsApp.
